Actually, this guy, Velo Yunpuu (Vello Õunpuu), is an estonian rally legend, who is compared very oftenly with Markko Märtin. There is a documental film about where this is discussed a little bit, but my opinion is that the times, cars and the format of the rally is very different, so we cannot compare it. He is from same part of the Estonia where Ott Tänak came from.

A rallydriver life is a very exiting. Here is the story how he is got into rallying:
He got into rallying in 1978-79 that way that he came to watch a local competition in Tallinn where the brightest professional rally drivers took part. Vello knew the organizer of the competition. He parked is car near the gate and blocked accidentially the road. One arrogant rallydriver came and said to Vello very badly that move this piece of sh**t out of here, Vello did it immediately with apologies. After a while, a organizer asked from Vello, he is got one place available for a competition in a last row. Firstly, Vello didn't want to go, excusing that he has no helmet, but organizer insisted very badly and gave him everything he needed for a competition. Funny thing is that he won this competition with his old unprepared moskvich against prepared rally cars and professional rally drivers. There was no question who should be in SU rally team. A year-two later he won soviet countries championship and got permission to drive in europe as well which was very restricted area for SU people.

Within a short period of rallydriving he had so many exiting adventures.
In one winterrally was a situation: Snowfall was so strong that visibility was a few meters. On recce Vello remembered one place that the road is going straight a few km-s to the some kind of tower which had a led blinking. Just before the tower the road turns right. Vello pushed very hard as always, and on SS, where was absolutely no visiblity, he saw only that led blinking on tower, and drove gas pedal down with only guideline that blinking led. They reached to the finish safely, but after a short time was a competitor behind. Vello was very surprized that he pushed the hell out the car, but the car behind was already at time control. Checking the situation, this car started before the Vello, but reached to the finish after the Vello. So Vello passed him without noticing each other . At the evening this competitor was buying so many drinks to Vello at the bar hoping that he talks about where he cutted the road or passed on SS without noticing each other.

At one rally he got a kiss and hugs from Michele Mouton. Vello saw at stage there were traces going down the hill and the car crashed far away from road. There were no OK sign so they decided to stop to make sure that everything is ok. After a while, Michele noticed Vello and waved him to continue SS. At service area Michele looked for Vello and gave him a kiss and hugs for being so caring.

But sadly very talented Vello had to stop half season in 1984 with sudden illness, which was the worst for the rallydriver. But every rallyfan in Estonia knows him even today.

Here is just example how exiting a rallydrivers life can be.
